About Boys From The Blackstuff

Be transported to 1980s Liverpool in Boys from the Blackstuff, based on the BAFTA-winning television series of the same name. Book Boys from the Blackstuff tickets on London Theatre.

Boys from the Blackstuff in London tells the tale of five unemployed men struggling to make ends meet in Liverpool in the 1980s. This show explores the human toll of Thatcherite economics as audiences watch the highs and lows that the characters go through.

Alan Bleasdale wrote the original series, which premiered in 1982, and he told The Guardian that people have wanted a new version of the show for the last two decades. However, it wasn’t until Bleasdale saw Sherwood by political playwright James Graham that they decided to collaborate on bringing Boys from the Blackstuff to the stage.

The show was an instant success with a sellout run in 2023 at Liverpool’s Royal Court and it received numerous rave reviews. A five-star review from BroadwayWorld said, “In 2023, I described Boys from the Blackstuff as ‘the must see production of the year’. Without a doubt, I can say it is not only the must see production of 2024, but one of the greatest theatre productions you will ever see.”

Boys from the Blackstuff is a play with an immensely talented cast, including Aron Julius (Death on the Nile) as Loggo, Nathan McMullen (Misfits) as Chrissie, Barry Sloane (Revenge) as Yosser, Philip Whitchurch (Billy Elliot, A View From the Bridge) as George, and Mark Womack (The Responder) as Dixie.

As the BroadwayWorld review said, “Barry Sloane showed why his performances are a masterclass in acting…he can deliver a joke one moment and instantly change his physicality and voice to show rage and anger, within the same sentence.”
